Bazaar del Mundo Casa Guadalajara

Old Town San Diego

In 1769, Father Junipero Serra established the first of 21 Spanish missions on a hill above what is now known as Old Town San Diego. The Spanish established the string of missions in their attempt to colonize California.
In the 1820s, a Mexican community was established at the base of the hill. So many adobes had been built by 1835, that the community came to be known as El Pueblo de San Diego. A US Marine Lieutenant and a US Navy Lieutenant raised the American flag in the Old Town San Diego Plaza in 1846. The State of California Department of Parks and Recreation established Old Town State Historic Park in 1968 in order to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Old Town.

Bazaar del Mundo

In 1971, Diane Powers purchased a run-down motel located within Old Town State Historic Park. She turned the property into Bazaar del Mundo, an outdoor complex of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. The shops are a series of boutiques selling handcrafted items from all over the world. Of special interest are the folk art and crafts from Mexico.
Diane Powers also owns several Mexican restaurants which are scattered throughout the San Diego area. Our restaurant, Casa Guadalajara, is among them.
