Visiting
this lovely Mexican folk art shop means seeing the best of what Mexico offers
without leaving San Diego. And the best part, all the treasures are together
in a single place. For over 30 years Artes de Mexico has been one of the foremost
Mexican folk art stores in the United States.
Each item is carefully selected; the broad variety includes the very best
of Talavera ceramics, Oaxacan hand-carved and painted wooden animals, authentic
regional costumes, masks, black Oaxacan ceramics, hand-made copper containers
from Santa Clara del Cobre, Dias de los Muertos figures, Taxco sterling silver
jewelry, Huichol beaded & yarn art and religious iconography, and more. The
shop displays a wealth of ethnic treasures. Other handcrafts include glass & brass
boxes, tin mirrors & ornaments, and ceramic trees of life. A lovely selection
of hand embroidered San Antonio dresses and other embellished Mexican clothing
is available.
For fiestas, colorful Mexican pinatas, paper flowers, papel picata, maracas,
serapes, and sombreros can make your party extra festive - all available at Artes
de Mexico.
These folk arts are at the root of Mexican culture and the various crafts
are centuries old; some date back to pre-Columbian times. Most owe their survival
to families, who have handed down their skills to their children and grandchildren.
A particular craft is normally associated with one family, in a specific region,
and usually made from indigenous materials. Some items are created for the delight
and entertainment of family members; others are utilitarian and sold at Mexican
markets, or have value beyond the region and are sold for export. Most families
depend on the sales of their crafts for their livelihood.
A wooden cart overflowing with colorful handmade paper flowers greets visitors
as they approach Artes de Mexico. A cheerful Mexican lady demonstrates this typical
Mexican craft to the delight of our visitors.
