John August Swanson - Diane Powers was pleased to invite you to meet one of the world’s foremost serigraph artists, the incomparable John August Swanson.  Mr. Swanson works in the vibrant colors of medieval illuminated manuscripts.  He is particularly inspired by biblical stories, and what they say about the courage and resiliency of the human spirit in times of adversity.  Each is created by painstakingly hand-cutting a single silk-screen for each color printed – as many as 89 screens layering color over color.  Each is then signed and numbered. John was here to discuss his work and inspirations.  He is delightful and it’s always a special day when he is here with us.

Dia de los Muertos
Dia de Los Muertos

There's no need to cross the border to celebrate "Dia de Los Muertos" (Day of the Dead)! Elaborately decorated altars honoring the dead will be displayed in the courtyard of the Bazaar del Mundo Shops and Casa Guadalajara in Old Town San Diego and at Casa de Pico in La Mesa during the annual Celebration October 26-November 4. This Hispanic tradition is a time to remember past family and loved ones. Colorful displays of hand-made paper cutouts, wood, terra cotta and papier-mâché Day of the Dead decorations have been used in these Mexican celebrations for generations.
There will be two altars built at the Bazaar Del Mundo on Oct 28 this year, which will stay up until Nov 4. One in the courtyard and the
second in the Laurel Burch Gallerita, in honor of Laurel Burch who died in September (view her obituary here). Casa Guadalajara altar will be ready for viewing on Oct 27th and taken down Nov 4th. Casa de Pico altar will be ready for viewing Oct 25th and taken down Nov 5th.
Sugar skull making demonstrations from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday, November 2 and Saturday November 3, as well as a free sugar skull making and decorating workshop for kids. Yolanda Romero's art exhibit is also on Nov 2 and 3.
